The “Post Yao Ming” Chinese men’s basketball team is trying to retrieve the ‘fast and flexible’ style of those years, but returning to “small, quick, smart” has been impossible, because “small” is not in line with the trend: twenty or thirty years ago, the Chinese team played “small, quick, smart” as a last resort. Now, the world trend is for “tall, fast and ruthless”.
In the Olympic Games, the sentence: “The Body is the capital of the revolution” is very appropriate. If your body is not in perfect condition, then you’re in for nothing.
From the first match against Spain to the match against Russia,
The basis of the Russian team’s style of confrontation are height, strength and speed. The combination of these three factors constitutes the basis of contemporary European basketball. Originally, the first two were seen as having a contradictory relationship with speed. But the Russian team seems to have solved this contradiction: centres Mozgov and Cowen or defensor Schwayder can all quickly find their place in a high-speed attack of defense formation, and you must know that Mozgov is 2m15, Cowen 2m11, and Schwayder 1m98.
Since before the 2008 Olympics, the Chinese team has gradually undergone a large-scale transformation, the most obvious manifestation of which is the choice of the striker: Sun Yue, who can play various roles, is over 2m05 tall. Deng Huade picked a few large horses as strikers for London. Zhou Peng is over 2m08, and on the Olympic registration form is listed as 2m10, Zhu Fangyu is 2m01, and Wang Shipeng, who only appeard in n.2 position, is 1m98. These choices are in line with international trends, otherwise, tactics would be restricted through insufficient height.
But the pace of this transformation has still not caught up with international trends: because of the height of the defensor and confrontational disadvantages, the tall striker in the Chinese team has had no opportunity to show his power so far. This time, Deng Huade positioned three defensors: Liu Wei, 1m90, Chen Jianghua, 1m88, and Guo Ailun, 1m92. Compared with the past, these are not too short, but the Russian team’s guard Schwayder is close to 2 meters, and 庞克拉绍夫 is 2m02.
The “post Yao Ming” Chinese men’s basketball team is trying to return to the fast and flexible style of these years, but it’s no longer possible to come back to “small, fast and smart”, because “small” is not in line with current trends, and when the Chinese team played “small, fast and smart” twenty or thirty years ago, that was already as a last resort. The international trend is now for “tall, fast and ruthless”.
For Chinese basketball as a whole (including fans), developments in European basketball are very strange; because time difference and for reasons of economic development, we are more familiar with the American NBA. The European championships and champions league all take place in the middle of the night, and have little influence on Chinese basketball, but the NBA style of handling the ball has gradually penetrated our league.
In such hostile environment, for the Chinese team, winning a match in the Olympic Games is really not easy.
